What is memorial jewellery?

Memorial jewellery is chosen to remember someone important to you. It can hold ashes, reproduce a print or handwriting, or carry an engraved name, date or message. You might choose a necklace to wear often, a ring, or a keepsake for particular moments.

Two ways to include ashes

Our ashes jewellery uses two different approaches. Each product page explains how its ashes are included.

Ashes in Silver

A small amount of ashes is incorporated into the silver itself. The Ashes in Silver Pebble Necklace is one example.

Secret Chamber

We place a small amount of ashes inside a chamber in the jewellery, then solder a decorative heart or other detail over it in our workshop. On the Secret Chamber Ring shown here, that detail is a silver or 9ct gold heart.

A card, a signature, a fingerprint

A few words in a familiar hand can be enough. If you have a card, note or fingerprint you treasure, show us what you have and we’ll explain which designs could work with it. Keep irreplaceable originals safe while we arrange a suitable copy.

A photograph of a finger is different from a fingerprint taken on paper, so let us know which you have. If a print isn’t available, handwriting or an engraved name or date offers another way to remember them.

Have a fingerprint you would like to use? Our Memorial Fingerprint Jewellery guide explains how we can help.

What happens after you choose

For an ashes keepsake, you order your jewellery first. We then send the kit and instructions for supplying the small amount of ashes needed.

Four steps for ashes jewellery

  1. Choose your jewellery and order

Choose the design, size and personalisation. If you need a hand with sizing, speak to us before ordering.

  2. Receive your collection kit

We send a small labelled container and instructions for preparing the ashes for transport.

  3. Send a small amount

Your order has its own reference number. Follow the kit instructions; we’ll let you know when your ashes arrive.

  4. We make your jewellery

We notify you when work begins. Your maker’s certificate and any unused ashes return with your finished jewellery.

Sending from outside the UK, or unsure about the instructions? Please ask us before posting. Making begins once we have everything needed for your order.

Current making times · Delivery and returns · Jewellery care

In the care of one dedicated maker

We know that sending us ashes is an act of trust. Our cremation ashes jewellery is made by one dedicated maker, working in a clean environment and on only one order at a time.

We send a kit to help you prepare the very small amount we need, and let you know when it arrives and when work begins. Your finished jewellery comes with your maker’s certificate, and any ashes we haven’t used are returned to you.

Morgan & French began as FingerPrint Jewellery in 2006. Jewellery made personal is where our story started.

Practical questions, answered with care

Do I need ashes to choose memorial jewellery?

No. A fingerprint, handwriting, handprint or footprint can be the starting point. You can also choose a design engraved with a name, date or message.

How are ashes included in the jewellery?

Our Ashes in Silver designs incorporate a small amount of ashes into the silver itself. Secret Chamber designs hold ashes inside a chamber that we seal in the workshop. The product page explains which method is used.

How much do I need to send, and how should I send it?

Only a very small amount. After you order, we send a kit with a labelled container and instructions. Please follow those instructions, and ask us before posting if you’re unsure or are sending from outside the UK.

How do you identify and look after the ashes I send?

Your order has its own reference number, and we supply a labelled container. One dedicated maker makes our cremation ashes jewellery, working in a clean environment on only one order at a time.

Will I know when my ashes arrive?

Yes. We let you know when they arrive and again when we begin making your jewellery.

Does my jewellery come with a certificate?

Our cremation ashes jewellery comes with a certificate from the maker responsible for it.

Will you return any unused ashes?

Yes. Any ashes we haven’t used are returned with your finished jewellery.

Can you use a print or handwriting I already have?

We’d be glad to look at what you have and explain which designs it could work with. Suitability depends on the clarity of the print or writing and the jewellery you choose. Get in touch before sending an irreplaceable original.

Can I choose a keepsake for a pet?

Yes. Explore ashes jewellery and dog nose print jewellery. If you already have ashes or a print, tell us what you have and we’ll explain which designs could work.

Can several family members choose different designs?

Yes. Tell us which designs you have in mind, and we’ll explain how much of the ashes, or which copies of a print or handwriting, we need for each order.

How long will my jewellery take to make?

Our current making times apply once we have everything needed for your order. Allow time to supply ashes, a print or handwriting too. If you have a particular date in mind, please ask us before ordering.

Can I wear it every day, and can a ring be resized?

Follow the care advice for the materials in your jewellery, including guidance on water and cleaning. The Secret Chamber and Silver Fingerprint rings shown above cannot be resized after making, so getting the fit right before ordering matters.

When you’re ready, we’re here

If there’s something you would like to keep close, but you’re not sure what we can make from it, please get in touch. We’ll explain the possibilities and help with the next step.
